A Colorful, Mexican-Infused Wedding at Jam Handy in Detroit, Michigan

A mariachi band, punchy paper blooms and papel picado accents made for a celebratory, DIY fiesta at Detroit’s The Jam Handy, where Alma Ibanez (35 and an accountant) and Michelle Awe (32 and an office administrator) tied the knot. “I’m Mexican-American and wanted a design that reminded me of home, while Michelle wanted something colorful and fun,” Alma says. The couple adorned their urban venue with string lights, succulents and a whimsical origami backdrop. Led by local mariachis, Alma (left) and Michelle joined up with their 100 guests for a post-ceremony parade around the building. Guests ate vegetarian enchiladas, pork tacos and Mexican street corn for dinner and paired their fare with bowls of homemade salsa made by Alma’s mother. Everyone finished their meals with sweet doughnuts and partygoers took home ceramic magnet favors handcrafted by Alma’s sister-in-law.
