A Colorful, Latin-Infused Wedding at Blanc in Denver, Colorado

A self-proclaimed “nontraditional couple,” Marisa Bollman (above right, 31 and a certified nursing assistant) and Melissa Alves (28 and a jewelry designer) put their own unique spin on their designer outfits, inventive ceremony and thoughtful reception. “The raw aesthetic of the venue was the perfect platform to build upon,” Marisa says. The couple infused the day with elements of Brooklyn, their former home. “It reminded me of our apartment, which was a renovated sugar factory with exposed brick," Marisa says. For their ceremony, the pair included a reading of Pablo Neruda’s poem “XVIII” and exchanged vintage rings. Then, they continued the celebration with flamenco music, Moscow mules and a five-course meal. “Our outfits showed we aren’t afraid to take risks and we don’t conform,” Marisa says. “What you wear on your day can really tell a story.” Melissa wore colorful shoes inspired by Marisa’s suit as a subtle way to coordinate. The couple harmonized various design styles—Scandinavian, Mexican, Moroccan and mid-century modern—into the reception’s decor. “We hand-selected every single piece, right down to the silverware,” Marisa says. A calligraphed geode slice greeted everyone at their place setting, along with a pre-set mushroom toast topped with edible florals. “It was chilled out and intimate,” Marisa adds. The sole member of the wedding party was the couple’s black affenpinscher, Penny, decked out in a floral collar. The pair cut into a buttercream confection capped with a topper designed by a sculpture artist. “We embraced the freedom to make it our own,” Marisa says. “And our vendors weren’t just people we loved to work with, but we now consider them friends.” The newlyweds ended the night with plenty of treats, including an ice cream bar and a dessert truck.
