A Classic Wedding at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC
For Washington, DC, natives Brittany Branand (29 and a research scientist) and Alex Malson (30 and an attorney), choosing the Washington National Cathedral for their wedding was a no-brainer. “We have spent countless afternoons wandering the paths and admiring the surroundings, having picnics on the lawn and enjoying each other’s company,” Brittany says. They invited loved ones to parktake in many of those activities for their classic garden party made up of watercolor details, stately notes and a refined blue-on-blue palette. First worn by her grandmother in 1941 and mom in 1974, Brittany’s dress was updated with a boat neck, deep V-back and large, flowing bow. A birdcage veil completed her retro look. The pair exchanged original vows under an arch built by the bride’s brothers. After, guests recited a communal pledge of their own to love and support the couple. Postceremony, partygoers mingled in Bishop’s Garden for cocktail hour while jazz played. In lieu of traditional favors, Brittany and Alex tucked handwritten notes inside calligraphed escort cards as a postwedding memento for guests. Another personal touch: A watercolor illustration depicting the couple in the cathedral’s garden appeared on the save-the-dates and on welcome bags. ''The Cathedral Nave, especially with its uplighting on the Gothic pillars, was beautiful but a bit imposing,” Brittany says. “We wanted to fill the space with warmth.” Deep pintuck navy linens, gardenia-filled arrangements gold chiavari chairs and compote vases did the trick. The pair sliced a carrot cutting cake, the groom’s favorite flavor, but offered a variety of smaller treats for guests.
