A Classic Wedding at Barker Tavern in Scituate, Massachusetts

Ambulances may not top lists as the most romantic place to find love, but one EMT shift shared by Kate Smith (28 and in health care) and Brian Sullivan (29 and in law enforcement) jumpstarted their hearts. That shift turned into a regular partnership, and soon, the two started seeing each other outside of work. Brian proposed five years after they started dating. “We got engaged while I was in graduate school and had been admitted to medical school,” says Kate. “The summer between my first and second years of medical school was the only summer I had off, so we picked it for our wedding date. As a result, we had a two year engagement, which gave us plenty of time to plan.” Brian designed Kate’s engagement ring by himself and had it made by a jeweler. They also matched her wedding band to the engagement ring. Brian’s wedding band came from a jeweler in Ireland, since both Kate and Brian are of Irish heritage and have traveled there in the past. It wasn’t the only nod to their Irish heritage at the wedding: The bride’s uncle sang a traditional Irish wedding song during the ceremony, a full Catholic mass at St. Agatha’s church in Milton, MA. The couple and their guests still laugh about one ceremony mishap. Kate explains: “During the ceremony, the priest never told us when to kiss. The deacon who conducted our rehearsal had prepared us for a different order. We were both so nervous all day, that once he proclaimed, ‘Give them a hand, they’re married!’ we didn’t know what to do, since it wasn’t ‘the kiss’ line we’d been told. So we jumped the gun and kissed twice during the ceremony. Our friends still make fun of us for that!”
