A Chic, Vintage Wedding at One Ocean Resort and Spa in Atlantic Beach, Florida

Angela Cibene (20) has always loved 1920s fashion, so when it was time for her and Joseph Leydard (23) to plan their wedding, using the era as inspiration was a natural choice. Everything from the feather-accented invitation suite to her lavender, lace-accented wedding shoes to the venue, One Ocean Resort and Spa, was picked with an art deco feel in mind. Their DIY touches, however, made the day even more personal. Angela and Joseph made each ceremony program (including the silk ribbon), designed every chalkboard sign, worked with family members and bridesmaids to make 150 calligraphy door hangers and even sent everyone home with shortbread cookie favors to acknowledge Angela’s time in Scotland. Of course, Angela and Joseph also love to have fun, so the soiree was filled with dancing. “We included songs that were significant in our relationship, as well as a traditional Scottish dance,” Angela says. “Once the music started, the dance floor was packed all night.” Bri Cibene Photography caught this moment and so much more. Their decor even put a personal twist on feathers -- and it all started with the invitation suite! Each invitation had a metallic foil feather border separated by gold dots. The same dots decorated the rest of their stationery, while a gold-dipped feather from Mineral and Matter was tucked into its band.
All 12 bridesmaids looked completely stunning in these floor-length Adrianna Papell dresses. “I've always loved Adrianna Papell, so when I saw that dress in Nordstrom and a few of my bridesmaids tried it on, I knew it was perfect,” Angela says. Each dress was covered with a lace overlay that gave it a more vintage look. An illusion neckline and short sleeves also added to the feel.
Angela wasn’t the only one to add a little plum to her look. Instead of dark lipstick, her bridesmaids got deep purple manicures with gold glitter details to match the day's palette.
To tie in their wedding color, Angela also wore these chic vintage-inspired wedding shoes in lavender. They resembled an upscale Mary Jane with ankle straps, a pointed opening toward the toe and these fun lace appliqués on the side. She found them at DSW.
Angela fully embraced the 1920s theme and went with a chic vintage-inspired look. Her ivory Jenny Packham dress was covered with delicate silver beading and clear sequins in a geometric pattern for that art deco vibe.
"I always loved the 1920s because of the groundbreaking style, fierce elegance and class that defined the era’s fashion," says Angela. Her Jenny Packham wedding dress from Kelly's Closet brought all of these details. The bodice alone had sweet flutter sleeves with sequins in a geometric pattern and a standout, silver-beaded detail just below the bust.
Her wedding hairstyle was more than meets the eye. Channeling their wedding's inspiration, she worked Angel Michele MUA to have this cute faux bob and "finger wave" curls.
Looking for a natural, free-form design, she picked out this chic arrangement from Rose of Sharon European Florist. Eucalyptus, green hydrangeas, white ranunculus, dried baby's breath and purple delphiniums were all brought together with tons of hand-dyed lavender ribbon.
As a wedding gift, Joseph gave Angela something extra special: her own “Cinderella” slippers! Designed by Ailila, they were covered in rhinestones and decorated with crystal-inspired details along the pointed toe.
Now this is a unique day to bring in a wedding color! Angela and Angel Michele MUA added a little drama and glam to her look with this bold plum lipstick. Her light eye shadow only made it stand out more.
Angela and Joseph also made their entrance sign. She wrote the welcome message and surrounded the border with yellow floral details. A few pink olive-leaf-inspired accents also decorated the space around a shabby-chic white frame.
This entrance display set the tone for their vintage soiree. The white desk from Set Event Rentals & Design was lined with a purple lace-inspired banner, a eucalyptus garland, black-and-white chalkboard signs and DIY ivory program fans. Each one was cut with a Silhouette Cameo machine and resembled a vintage hand mirror. But the personal details didn’t end there. The printed handles was custom ordered from Etsy and then wrapped in hand-dyed purple silk ribbons.
Now this is one gorgeous way to make a statement. With white fabric draped across the ceiling, they chose a white wedding arch to match, then covered the back with flowers. It looked like a garden was popping into the ceremony with tons of white hydrangeas, eucalyptus, amaranthus, greenery, white chrysanthemums, ivy and purple delphiniums behind the accent.
On top of this overflowing garden-style backdrop, Rose of Sharon European Florist also decorated the wedding arch with these smaller arrangements on each post. Bunches of white hydrangeas, eucalyptus, purple and white delphiniums, dried baby's breath, white roses and greenery were all tied to the frame. (This same design was also used for Angela and her bridesmaids' bouquets.)
When Angela’s family lived in Scotland, they loved to shop at Monsoon. So it was no surprise that her nieces wore chic flower girl dresses from the same store. Each one rocked the vintage theme in an ivory tulle dress with this lace bodice and matching short sleeves. The headband matched it perfectly with even more lace detailing and a feather flower detail. Of course, no flower girl is equipped without her blooms, so they each carried fresh petals in an ivory clutch.
Angela and Joseph brought their vintage decor and a few traditions into the ceremony. Her father presided over the service by a vintage altar as she and Joseph shared their First Communion. “We also took part in the classic Scottish tradition of "tying the knot,” in which the couple's hands are tied together to signify the bond that they're making,” Angela says.
Of course, Angela didn’t just stop at the dress. She went all-out and found a matching art deco-style veil by Jenny Packham. It covered her faux-bob hairstyle like a sheer cap and cascaded down the the floor. Simple ivory beading also wrapped around its headband.
Each and every guest was encouraged to fill DIY doily cones with dry lavender before the ceremony. This way, they could literally shower the newlyweds in flowers as they walked back up the aisle.
Their proposal included two of Angela’s loves: family and giraffes. Joseph proposed on a trip to the zoo with her immediate in Jacksonville, Florida—right in front of the giraffe exhibit. He gave her a princess-cut diamond engagement ring with four diamonds surrounded by a square diamond halo. For their wedding day, she matched its baguette-covered band with a set of two thin diamond wedding rings. Angela also gave Joseph an understated tungsten ring for their celebration.
Each bridesmaid bouquet perfectly complemented Angela's natural arrangement. Rose of Sharon European Florist took care of the design with bright purple delphiniums, white ranunculus, white roses, dried baby's breath, succulents and eucalyptus all wrapped in multiple flowing lavender ribbons.
Angela and Joseph chose a few sweets from Sweet ‘N’ Flour, including fruit tarts, lemon bars, buckwheat brownies, shortbread cookies and four wedding cakes to fill their dessert display. “I wanted the cakes to capture all the decadence, sparkle and richness of the 1920s,” Angela says. This dark chocolate mint confection even had a few gold details add some glamorous and match its base. Eucalyptus also decorated the dessert, complementing their natural centerpieces.
Their dessert table had four wedding cakes from Sweet ‘N’ Flour, each with a different topper. This naked confection was separated with think buttercream frosting and lemon cake that looked almost too good to eat. A sweet lace topper with "Just Married" added some personal flair while succulents decorated the base.
Since Angela lived in Scotland for many years, they made sure to include one of the nation’s popular treats in the reception. Guests were welcome to try a few varieties of shortbread cookies from Sweet ‘N’ Flour, including rosewater and vanilla bean. Even more shortbread cookies were given to them as wedding favors.
Angela’s sister-in-law made their stationery even more personal with a few DIY details, including a do-not-disturb sign. The custom accent was decorated with black calligraphy that let passersby know guests had had an awesome night at the wedding. Each was printed through CatPrint, an online retailer, and cut with a round hole punch by the bridesmaids.
