A Casual Rooftop Wedding at the DeSoto Rooftop Terrace in Portland, Oregon

Lindsay Scott (30, a pediatric cardiac sonographer) and Colin Scott (32, an attorney) met around the holidays while they were both waiting in line for coffee in Portland. “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” was playing outside, and although Colin knew what the song was, he still turned to Lindsay to ask in order to spark conversation. They discovered they had a mutual friend before they parted ways, Colin asked the friend for Lindsay’s phone number and the rest was history. A few years later, Colin proposed to Lindsay on the waterfront with cherry blossoms blooming all around them, and the couple started to plan their wedding. They decided to have their outdoor ceremony at Mount Tabor, a public park in Portland that overlooks the parts of the city, where the couple used to enjoy summer picnics and go for walks. Rose petals and hanging were the only décor that was added to the naturally beautiful environment, which provided the occasion with a rustic backdrop. The reception took place at the DeSoto Rooftop, representing the urban lifestyle that the couple fell in love with and where they also fell in love. Succulents and single flower blooms arranged in glass containers were centerpieces for reception tables underneath market umbrellas to shield guests from the sun. The simple and casual wedding achieved what the couple had envisioned, which was a day filled with friends, family and, above all, their love for each other.

Lindsay carried a flourishing bouquet of pink and orange roses mixed in with a variety of green succulents.
“We chose Mount Tabor, a public park in southeast Portland that offers gorgeous views of downtown Portland and the west hills, as the site of our wedding ceremony,” says Lindsay. “It's a place we often went for walks and sunny summer picnics.”
“At the ceremony site, our only decorations were rose petals to create the boundaries for the aisle and two shepherd's hooks to hang glass globes filled with succulents,” says Lindsay.

Our wedding day fashions were simple and not fussy," says Lindsay. "Colin wore a grey lightweight suit and his groomsmen wore a button up shirt with grey pants. All had coordinating but not matching ties. The bridesmaids wore coordinating grey knee length dresses and I wore a lace v-neck sheath dress in ivory by Monique L'Huillier."

“The DeSoto is an outdoor urban rooftop venue in the Pearl District, which overlooks the Park Blocks and into downtown,” says Lindsay. “It's surrounded by tall buildings and has a very contemporary, urban chic vibe to it. We loved that our wedding included what living in Portland meant to us, which was outdoor activities and urban living.”
“I made the table numbers and guests place setting cards,” says Lindsay. “Each table was represented by a Portland icon, and I hand-carved stamps into these icons and stamped each guest card and each table number. It was very important to us that the city of Portland was a big part of our day!”

“The flower arrangements on each table at the reception were glass containers with succulents and single fresh flower blooms," says Lindsay.
“For our reception décor, we had big open market umbrellas to provide shade from the afternoon sun,” says Lindsay. “Grey tablecloths chosen for the tables contrasted nicely with white linen napkins and white chairs. Market lights were strung across the rooftop to provide an intimate feeling as the sun went down and our guests danced into the night.”

“Neither of us really wanted cake as a dessert especially on a hot summer day,” says Lindsay. “Instead, we chose berry pies that could showcase ripe Oregon berries, which came from a fabulous pie shop in Portland called Random Order.”
“We tried to make our wedding as laid back and easy-going as possible, since we wanted the day to focus on each other, our family, and our friends,” says Lindsay.
