A Bright Modern Wedding at the Madison Event Center in Covington, Kentucky

Emily Wickstrom (25 and a graphic designer) and Joe Schaper (25 and a financial advisor) met online on OkCupid.com, while Emily was in college. After sending dozens of page-long messages, the couple decided to meet in person. Despite Joe's questionable fashion choices, the couple had an instant connection. A year after moving in together, Joe popped the question on Sweetest Day, a holiday celebrated in the Midwest. "Joe handed me a gift and all he said was 'It's something you can wear.' It was in a shirt-sized box so I thought he bought me clothes," says Emily. "When I opened it, there was a frame inside with a picture of Joe holding a sign saying 'Will you spend the rest of your life with us?' and a sign around our dog's neck saying 'Say yes!' He then got down on one knee and proposed!" The couple planned a modern wedding at the Madison Event Center in Covington, KY. "I was originally wanting to have an outdoor wedding, but all of the venues for the following fall were booked and I didn't want to wait another year to get married," says Emily. "So, we decided to have a November 1st wedding instead. It was also the start of the 'winter' season, which meant a major discount on our venue." The Event Center's modern design was the perfect fit for their vision, offering a blank canvas for Emily and Joe to make their own. They chose a vibrant color palette of peacock blue, green, and gray, introducing sparkly accents and graphic prints wherever possible to add texture, intrigue and fun to the decor. DIY touches added a personal element to the day, like custom designed stationery, table numbers, escort cards, the card box and even the spot lighting on the dance floor.
