A Bright, Bohemian Backyard Wedding in Massachusetts

Francesca Balboni (28 and an art history PhD candidate) and Matthew Flagg (27 and a biology PhD candidate) pulled off a bohemian backyard bash with vibrant wildflowers, shibori-dyed linens and playful citrus hues. “We wanted the day to echo our life together: relaxed, easy and full of laughter, music and good food,” Francesca says. “The backyard itself went a long way in creating that feeling, so we wanted to let the natural surroundings shine.” Kilim rugs adorned with petals and wild arrangements of bright blooms served as the ceremony altar. “It was important to us that we write our own ceremony. Words have come to carry a certain weight for us,” Francesca says. The wedding party’s attire reflected the day’s vibrant, carefree feel, with Francesca’s bridesmaids donning short-and-sweet cocktail dress in shades of sunny yellow and grapefruit. In addition to a coconut cake, guests snacked on a spread of chocolate-peanut-butter-flavored cupcakes. Fare was passed around wood tables decked out with eucalyptus garlands and shibori napkins. For their first dance as newlyweds, the couple performed a choreographed routine that showcased their swing dancing skills. “We never anticipated the response we got,” Francesca says of shocking their guests.
