A Baseball-Themed Wedding at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California
Games have played a central role in Becky Gordon (31 and a nurse) and Vaughn Wood's (49 and a training and development specialist) relationship from day one—they hit it off at a Christmas party when they were placed on the same Trivial Pursuit team. When the time came for them to officially team up, the baseball fans chose Angels Stadium in Anaheim, California. "We are huge Angels fans, so that was clearly part of our theme," Becky says. "But we wanted to be careful not to overdo it. When you opt to get married at a venue with such a predetermined palette like a ballpark has, you don't so much decide on the colors; you figure out how to reinvent what is already there to match your vision." With the help of planners from Poppy Shoppe Productions in Orange, California, the couple opted to play along with the stadium's reds and greens, using them as accents in their colorful floral arrangements and reception decor. After cheering on Becky and Vaughn from the stands as they wed on home plate, the 85 guests headed to the stadium's Ketel One Club, where they sat at tables named for Angels players and dined on delicious game-day fare like fish tacos and mac and cheese. In another personal touch, Becky and her father revised the traditional father-daughter dance to better reflect their sports-centric relationship: "We started out dancing, then my dad tossed me a baseball mitt and we played catch. This was meaningful because growing up we shared a huge bond over sports. My dad coached me and my sisters in every sport imaginable, so this felt way more meaningful than dancing would have." At the end of the night, guests could continue toasting the newly minted Team Wood with their favors—pint glasses etched with the wedding date. Chalk one up for the love of the game—and two for love. —Carolyn Meers
