A Barn Wedding at Big Sky Barn in Montgomery, Texas, With Vietnamese and Chinese Elements
Entrepreneurs Connie and Michael are both half Vietnamese and half Chinese, so they wanted to honor family traditions at their wedding. “To be honest, it made the planning so much harder,” Connie says. They had to choose a “lucky date” to get married, according to the Chinese calendar, that also fell on a Sunday, when the restaurant they own is closed. Landing on December 23, they milked the season’s warm, romantic tones, filling Big Sky Barn with blush pinks, gold lanterns and lots of velvet.
The watercolor invitations included a foil-stamped Chinese double happiness symbol. Echoing the invitations, printed cotton fabric directed the 185 guests to their seats. The couple served red-wine-braised short ribs, mushroom risotto and Chilean sea bass with champagne-dill reduction.
“I wanted our wedding to feel romantic, cozy and wintry,” Connie says. Pillar candles, bistro lights and a stone fireplace did the trick. Guests dug into green tea or rocky road ice cream sandwiches, made with red velvet and chocolate chip cookies. As for the cake, they had three flavors to choose from: vanilla-strawberry, chocolate-raspberry or Italian cream with cream cheese frosting.
